“Are You My Mother?” by P.D.Eastman

A baby bird is hatched while his mother is away. Fallen from his nest, he sets out to look for her and asks everyone he meets -- including a dog, a cow, and a plane -- "Are you my mother?" We’ll get ready for Mother’s Day with this story about a bird looking for his mother, then make a treat for real birds that live in our own backyards and here at the Children’s Garden! (Peanut allergy kids, we have a peanut-free recipe especially for you!)

Tuesday, May 15th (Museum of Ancient Life)

“Franklin's Class Trip” by Paulette Bourgeois

In a familiar situation for many children, once he realizes that the dinosaurs in the museum are not alive, Franklin is able to enjoy his class visit there. Friday is Museum Day and we are celebrating in a museum with a book about a museum! Then we’ll make stick puppets of Franklin and few friends so you can take them on a trip through our museum and show them it’s not scary at all!

Wednesday, May 16th (Children’s Discovery Garden)

“Some Frog!” by Eve Bunting

It'll take some frog to win the frog-jumping contest at Billy's school. But Billy's all set--he's got a champion jumper, a grandpa with lots of good advice, and a mom and grandma to cheer him on. Everything will be perfect--if only his dad shows up. Mark Twain wrote a story about a Frog Jumping Jubilee like the one in our story, and a real life contest like it is held every year in California… this coming Saturday! Some make a fun frog craft and meet some real live frogs courtesy of Critters 2 Go!

Tuesday, May 22th ( Museum of Ancient Life)

"Owen and Mzee" by Isabella Hatkoff,

Craig Hatkoff, and Dr. Paula Kahumbu This is the true story of two great friends: a baby hippo named Owen and a giant tortoise named Mzee. In December 2004 a frightened young hippo, separated from his family by the devastating tsunami in Southeast Asia, adopted an 130-year-old tortoise as his "mother." And the tortoise remarkably accepted the baby hippo as his own. Owen and Mzee are now inseparable and their story has captured hearts everywhere. World Turtle Day is tomorrow! Come meet a real tortoise (like Mzee is) and a real turtle courtesy of Critters 2 Go and then make a colorful tortoise craft!

Wednesday, May 23th (Children’s Discovery Garden)

“In the middle of the puddle” by Mike Thaler

Two friends, a frog named Fred and a turtle named Ted, stick together as torrential rains change their cozy puddle to a pool, then a pond, a lake, and finally a sea. The rain stops just when they wish it would, and the waters recede to puddle size again. Today is World Turtle Day! Come celebrate with a real tortoise and a real turtle (like Ted!) courtesy of Critters 2 Go and then turn a bowl into your very own paper turtle.

Tuesday, May 29th (Museum of Ancient Life)

“Dinosaur ROAR!” By Paul Strickland

Whether weak or strong, fast or slow, etc., these colorful, slightly daft-looking creatures introduce a series of opposites as they parade across the double-page spreads. And where are the beasts marching? To eat their lunch "gobble, gobble, nibble, nibble, munch, munch, scrunch!" Make a fancy dinosaur scratch ornament to take home! Kids of all ages will love this fun craft.

Wednesday, May 30th (Children’s Discovery Garden)

“Owl Moon” by Jone Yolen

Among the greatest charms of children is their ability to view a simple activity as a magical adventure. Such as a walk in the woods late at night. Jane Yolen captures this wonderment in a book whose charm rises from its simplicity. "It was late one winter night, long past my bedtime, when Pa and I went owling." The two walked through the woods with nothing but hope and each other in a journey that will fascinate many a child. John Schoenherr's illustrations help bring richness to the countryside adventure. The book won the 1988 Caldecott Medal. Come learn about owls in this wonderful story and make an owl puppet!

Tuesday, June 5th (Museum of Ancient Life)
“Monster Toddler” by John Wallace

Sweet little Timothy is the sweetest boy in the world, except when he turns into…MONSTER TODDLER! That's when this darling boy's rambunctious alter ego takes over, landing him in a heap of mess. How will he get out? It's WONDER CHARLOTTE to the rescue! Make a dinosaur mask so you can dress up just like the Monster Toddler!

Wednesday, June 6th (Children’s Discovery Garden)
“Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm” by Jerdine Nolen

Harvey Potter was a very strange fellow indeed. He was a farmer but not like any farmer you've ever met. He didn't grow corn, okra, or tomatoes. Harvey Potter grew balloons. No one knew exactly how he did it, but with the help of the light of a full moon, one friendly child catches a peek of just how Harvey Potter does it. And keeps some magic for herself. Decorate your very own farm balloon and take some magic home with you. Just don’t let it float away!

Tuesday, June 12th (Museum of Ancient Life)
“Tyrannosaurus Dad” by Liz Rosenberg

Tobias’s father is a lot like other fathers—he likes corny jokes, and doing magic tricks, and works really hard at the office. But there the resemblance ends. He has teeth as sharp as steak knives, is forty feet high, and weighs as much as a locomotive. He is, in fact, a tyrannosaurus rex! Make your own Tyrannosaurus Dad, Grampa, Uncle, or special guy friend in your family a Dino-mite Fathers day card!

Wednesday, June 13th( Children’s Discovery Garden)
“Dad and Me in the Morning” by Patricia Lakin and Robert G. Steele

Early one morning, when it is still dark, a young boy wakes to his special alarm clock. He puts on his hearing aid and his clothes, then goes to wake his father. Together they walk down to the beach. Jacob is Deaf, so he and his father sign or lipread or just squeeze each other's hands. Come to story time today to learn a few Father’s Day things in American Sign Language like Dad, Love, I Love You, and Happy Father’s Day. Then make a sweet surprise to give to your favorite dad, grampa, uncle, or special guy friend in your family for Father’s Day on Sunday!

Tuesday, June 19th ( Museum of Ancient Life)
“Dinosaur vs. the Library” by Bob Shea

Dinosaur is going to one of his favorite places: the library! On the way, he invites his friends--a lonesome turtle, a sad owl and more-- to roar along with him. But how will his roaring go over at the library? Has Dinosaur finally met his match in Storytime? Make a place to list all the books you want to read! When you hear of something you want to read write it down in your Books to Read Book and take it with you to the library!

Wednesday, June 20th( Children’s Discovery Garden)
“Once Upon a Cloud” by John Himmelman

With whimsical, dreamlike illustrations, award-winning artist Matt Mahurin presents the wonder and beauty of clouds and the many forms they take in our imaginations. Meet on the Ladybug Stage and make your own puffy cloud picture!

Tuesday, June 26th (Museum of Ancient Life)
“Harvey Moon, Museum Boy” by Pat Cummings (OPL)

To liven up his class trip, Harvey Moon brings his pet lizard, Zippy, along to the museum. Whoops! When Zippy escapes, Harvey's adventures begin. You'll be laughing and wondering what's next as knights, dinosaurs, and even mummies get into the act. Cut loose in a museum setting with a brave boy, a lively lizard, a funny plot—and award-winning author and artist Pat Cummings at her entertaining best. Come for the story and meet a real lizard courtesy of Critters 2 Go! You will get to see a leopard gecko close up, and maybe even touch it. Also, get a Leopard Gecko coloring sheet to color your own!
